Acclaimed independent radio station 1BTN unveils crowdfunding drive to raise £15,000

Based in Brighton & Hove but broadcasting worldwide via 1btn.fm, 1BTN has grown to become one of the UK’s most respected independent radio stations in just over two and a half years. The diverse roster features over 180 presenters spanning more than 100 shows.

To raise £15,000 to secure 1BTN’s future and enable it to grow, station founders Michael Jukes and Christopher Galloway have set up a crowdfunding campaign for individuals and businesses, running until 6 December. The money raised will go towards updating studio equipment and in the search for a new home for its expanding operations, particularly its community outreach.

With 1BTN crowdfunding pledges starting at just £5 for an on-air shout out, and up to £5,000 for a business sponsorship package comprising of on-air and online advertising for 12 months, there are many different ways for individuals and businesses to show their support. Other pledges include £25 for a T-shirt; £50 for an exclusive two-hour mix by the pledger’s favourite 1BTN DJ; and £500 to present a two-hour 1BTN show!

1BTN has achieved much in its first two-and-a-half years: joining the local DAB+ service in December 2015, acquiring an FM Community licence (101.4FM) earlier this year, and collaborating with local charitable organisations to host workshops, work at festivals and support local initiatives. 1BTN currently work with learning disabilities charity Kiss My Disco, homeless charity YMCA, and AudioActive.

The majority of presenters (past and present) have strong local connections and many have national and international followings including Steve Mason (Beta Band/King Biscuit Me), Martin Duffy (Primal Scream), Alice Russell (Tru-Thoughts), Balearic Mike, Fat Cat Records, Soft Rocks and many more. Recent guest DJs include acclaimed selector DJ Nature, Justin Robertson, Frankie Valentine, and Bradley Zero.

1BTN Founder Michael Jukes says: “As with any volunteer-led organisation, the lack of funding is – and continues to be – a daily challenge.”

“We need help from the public. The support we receive on a daily basis is why we’re pushing forward with our plans to grow.”
